Every summer for the last five years, the EU has organised a promotional truck tour to raise awareness of equal rights and combat stereotypes. The huge yellow truck, plastered with the message "respect", is hard to miss - but, with its 1.4m wheelchair lift, easy to access.

Vice-President Jacques Barrot, Commissioner responsible for Justice, Freedom and Security underlined the usefulness of the reciprocity mechanism: "This Report clearly demonstrates that the dialogue with third countries under the new visa-reciprocity mechanism has once again proven effective, resulting in visa free travel for all our citizens to another 3 countries. The Report however also proposes retaliatory measures where insufficient progress has been achieved. It is unacceptable that nationals from some third countries can benefit from visa free travel to the EU whilst some of our fellow EU citizens can't travel visa free to those countries. This is at the heart of our visa reciprocity mechanism and I am committed to ensuring that that principle is fully respected ".

Commission plans ending roaming rip-offs for text messages abroad. The 2.5 billion text messages sent every year by roaming customers in the EU cost over 10 times more than domestic short messages (SMS), show figures released today by the European Commission. The average cost of a roaming text message in the EU between October 2007 and March 2008 was €0.29 according to the European Regulators’ Group (ERG), but can be as high as €0.80 for travellers from Belgium. Calls on the industry for self-regulation and voluntary reductions of roaming prices for text messages have not been answered. The Commission will therefore start working on measures to ensure that consumers benefit from a truly single market for mobile text services. The Commission will also seek to put an end to "bill shocks" that can hit roaming customers using a mobile connection to surf the Internet. New measures could be proposed by the Commission to the European Parliament and the Council in early autumn.

From the late 1970's he was active in the clandestine opposition to the communist regime of Poland. He was one of intellectuals who joined the strikers at the Gdansk shipyard, birthplace of the Solidarity movement in 1980. He was interned for one year under martial law in 1981, and imprisoned again in 1983. Upon his release he immediately resumed political activity. He was later one of the architects of the new political regime of Poland after the fall of communism in 1989.Successively a member of the Polish Parliament, president of several parliamentary committees and co-founder of the Democratic Union, he was Foreign Minister from 1997 to 2000. Poland joined NATO during his tenure and made great progress towards EU membership.

The OPEN DAYS is aimed at EU and regional policy-makers, experts and representatives of banking, business and civil society groups. The seminars and workshops will focus on first experiences of implementing the 345 cohesion policy programmes running from 2007-2013, worth a total investment of about EUR 500 billion in EU and national funds.
