The Sixth European Week of Regions and Cities "Open Days 2008" kicks off in Brussels today. This year's edition of the EU's biggest event on European local governments is entitled "Regions and Cities in a Challenging World". The event will continue until 9 October. It is jointly organised by the Committee of the Regions, the European Commission and 217 partner regions and cities from 32 states. Some 7,400 participants from across the European Union will attend 145 seminars and workshops.
Wielkopolska, together with 9 partners: Niedersachsen, Emilia-Romagna, Northern and East Netherlands Provinces, Pilsen Region, Lower Silesia, Navarra, Yorkshire and Humber and East Midlands, will host two workshops. One of them, entitled „Regions as the catalysts for change: How EU regions are responding to the challenges of climate change", will be held on 8 October, 16:45, at the Wielkopolska Office in Brussels. The key attendees of the seminar will be Member of the European Parliament professor Jerzy Buzek and UN Representative from Geneva Jaco Tavernier, dealing with environmental programmes.
One of the objectives of the workshop will be to draw the attention of entire Europe to this year's United Nations Climate Change Conference, to be held in the capital of Wielkopolska.

Oscar winner Jan A.P. Kaczmarek to conduct a concert celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Wielkopolska region's presence in Brussels.
Marek Woźniak, Marshal of the Wielkopolska Region, will host a concert celebrating the fifth anniversary of Wielkopolska Region’s presence in Brussels. The concert will take place on September 16th, at the Flagey’s Cultural Centre in Brussels and will be conducted by Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, world-famous composer and Oscar 2005 winner for the best music sore for the film “Finding Neverland”.
The most beautiful works of the artist will be presented by the Orchestra of Poznań Philharmonics, accompanied by Adam Mickiewicz University Academic Choir, under the baton of Marek Pijarowski. The programme of the concert includes the first live concert performance of Jan A.P. Kaczmarek’s score to “Passchendaele”, which will be first shown at the opening of the Toronto Film Festival in early September.
The concert is organized by the Information Office of the Wielkopolska Region in Brussels. The project is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute and organized in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in the Kingdom of Belgium.
