The OPEN DAYS is aimed at EU and regional policy-makers, experts and representatives of banking, business and civil society groups. The seminars and workshops will focus on first experiences of implementing the 345 cohesion policy programmes running from 2007-2013, worth a total investment of about EUR 500 billion in EU and national funds. Participation is free, with 143 specialist seminars to choose from and a total of 15,000 seats available from 6-9 October. The planned Small Business Act is a “crucial milestone”, commission president José Manuel Barroso said. It will mean “less red tape and more red carpet” for entrepreneurs.
The EU is home to some 23m small and mid-sized businesses (defined as companies with under 250 employees). They provide the majority of jobs in the EU, especially in key industries like textiles, construction and furniture-making, and are considered crucial to economic success.

In each EU Member State, European Commission Representations and EUROPE DIRECT Information Centres will organise over 500 events to celebrate Europe Day on 9 May. The main theme this year is intercultural dialogue. Through the celebrations thousands of people will be able to explore the many faces of the EU.
European Commission Vice-President Margot Wallström said: "Europe Day is an occasion for the EU Institutions to show their human face and for people to see that Europe is about people, and not just institutions or legislation."
