The Committee of the Regions, with the support of the Covenant of Mayors initiative, has launched a survey on 'Sustainable energy policy by EU regions and cities: Good practices and challenges' and is asking EU cities and regions to contribute to this survey by describing their policy on sustainable energy practices.

EU "macro-regional" strategies define priority projects for groups of regions or countries like the Baltic Sea region or the Danube area. A high-level conference organised by the Committee of the Regions (CoR) in Brussels today was the first opportunity to link these separate geographical debates and examine the new concept as a whole. EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn joined more than 300 politicians and experts to debate the potential and limitations of existing and emerging macro-regional strategies.

On 10 April 2010 on the way to commemoration ceremony of the 70 th anniversary of the Katyn massacre the President of the Republic of Poland Mr Lech Kaczynski, the First Lady Mrs Maria Kaczynska, members of the polish delegation and crew lost their lives.

The European Commission has launched today the Europe 2020 Strategy to go out of the crisis and prepare EU economy for the next decade. The Commission identifies three key drivers for growth, to be implemented through concrete actions at EU and national levels: smart growth (fostering knowledge, innovation, education and digital society), sustainable growth (making our production more resource efficient while boosting our competitiveness) and inclusive growth (raising participation in the labour market, the acquisition of skills and the fight against poverty). This battle for growth and jobs requires ownership at top political level and mobilisation from all actors across Europe. Five targets are set which define where the EU should be by 2020 and against which progress can be tracked.

The European Parliament overwhelmingly approved the new European Commission led by President José Manuel Barroso on 9 February, clearing the way for the EU executive to take office nearly four months behind schedule.
