The European Commission has launched today the Europe 2020 Strategy to go out of the crisis and prepare EU economy for the next decade. The Commission identifies three key drivers for growth, to be implemented through concrete actions at EU and national levels: smart growth (fostering knowledge, innovation, education and digital society), sustainable growth (making our production more resource efficient while boosting our competitiveness) and inclusive growth (raising participation in the labour market, the acquisition of skills and the fight against poverty). This battle for growth and jobs requires ownership at top political level and mobilisation from all actors across Europe. Five targets are set which define where the EU should be by 2020 and against which progress can be tracked.

The European Parliament overwhelmingly approved the new European Commission led by President José Manuel Barroso on 9 February, clearing the way for the EU executive to take office nearly four months behind schedule.

On the 9 - 11 February a plenary seesion of the Committee of the Regions took place in Brussels. It launched the new 2010 – 2015 term. 344 representatives of European regions and local authorities chose people for key positions at the Committee, formed thematic Commissions and concluded necessary agreements within the four political groups and twenty seven national delegations. In this framework the EPP, which presently constitutes the strongest political group (130 members) offered Marchal Marek Woźniak to take up the position of the President of the Commission for Teritorial Cohesion (COTER). Is is one the most important Commissions of the CoR, which deals with topics linked closely to such regional issues as: economic, social and territorial cohesion, structural funds, macroregional strategies, transport, territorial cooperation and spatial planning.

"The CoR will be more courageous and persevering in its political action", says newly-elected CoR President Mercedes Bresso.
The newly elected President of the Committee of the Regions, Mercedes Bresso (IT/PES), has invited the Assembly to be more courageous in pursuing its political aims. The leader hailed the enormous political progress the institution has made in 15 years and underlined its key mission to effectively represent the common interest of all sub-national authorities in Europe. "The institutional debate is over. It's time to bring the Treaty of Lisbon to life. We will no longer just ask that regional and local authorities are taken into consideration. We will not just be the yes-man. We will enter the political debate with substantial proposals and we will not – if it is required - shy away from political controversy."

“Increase prosperity within the Baltic macro-region, its accessibility and attractiveness, caring for environmental protection and safety, all indicate new directions of activity for the states included in the Baltic Sea Strategy. However, the success of this initiative mainly depends on the extent to which regional and local partners are incorporated in the realisation of the Strategy. Implementation of innovations, exchanges of knowledge and experience, common scientific research, cooperation between enterprises, integrated activity for the benefit of environmental protection, transport and tourism development – these are indispensable tools in achieving our objectives, these are the areas within which the activities of local and regional authorities shall play a fundamental role”, said Marek Woźniak on 8th, December during the opening of an international conference at the Committee of the Regions in Brussels. The conference was initiated by Marek Woźniak, Marshal of the Wielkopolska Region (Vice-President of the Committee of the Regions), and Bo Källstrand, Governor of the County of Västernorrland, Sweden with which Wielkopolska has been cooperating for many years. The aim of the event was to emphasise the role of regions and local authorities in implementing the Baltic Sea Strategy. of future EU policies will depend on the success of this Strategy. If, within the framework of the Strategy, it is possible to create a coherent, economically strong and competitive macro-region around the altic Sea, and if it is possible to coordinate activities related to transport, environment protection, development of entrepreneurship nd innovativeness, it will be possible to talk about the success of this enormous, long-lasting project. Hence, it is extremely important to incorporate local partners – the authorities of the region, provinces and communes, those having the best knowledge of their potential and the needs of their citizens, in its realisation.
