In most cases, the idea of rivalry in the artistic dimension contradicts the musical ethics. It can only be construed a positive and creative phenomenon in the sense of “challenge”, or unending pursuit of the ideal. In no case, however, can it be imbued with the spirit of confrontation, as then it would become pointless.
On the other hand, competitions can make splendid opportunities to meet people, to present talents to the world, to shine light upon beautiful personalities – sources of our musical delight for years.
Competitions let young musicians find recognition in the eyes of greatest international luminaries: conductors, record producers, representatives of the media, and other specialist institutions.
The Wieniawski is one of the oldest, and from its very onset – owing to such prestigious names, as Ginette Neveu and David Oistrakh – one of the most important violin events.
Young violin players from all over the world! If you want to follow this beautiful path in October 2022, do come to Poznań.
AUGUSTIN DUMAY
Chairman of the Jury
Application deadline: January 10, 2022
Preselection Jury:
Augustin Dumay
Madeleine Carruzzo
Daniel Stabrawa
Henryk Wieniawski, patron of the Musical Society, is one of the most illustrious virtuosos of the violin and a fascinating personality, even by the most contemporary standards. His great asset as well as a source of success was the ability to harmoniously combine Polishness with openness to world aesthetic trends. One can be sure that if he were to live and give concerts today, he would also be a top musical personality, one to garner widespread interest of the media.
Organised since 1935 and ranked among the oldest and most prestigious violin events in the world, competitions bearing his name cultivate the memory of the violinist and composer.
These are the prize-winners and distinguished members of the jury who attest the position and legacy of the Competitions. Ginette Neveu, winner of the 1935 event, opens the list. Subsequent fifteen editions featured the likes of Igor Oistrakh (USSR), Charles Treger (USA), Keiko Urushihara (Japan), Soyoung Yoon (South Korea), Bartłomiej Nizioł (Poland), or Veriko Tchumburidze (Georgia/Turkey). Among the celebrities who headed the competition jury, we find the names of Grażyna Bacewicz, Henryk Szeryng, Shlomo Mintz, Maxim Vengerov, or Krzysztof Penderecki.
Due to the pandemic, instead of 2021, the 16th edition of International H. Wieniawski Violin Competition shall be held a year later (7-21 October 2022). We have asked the French virtuoso Augustin Dumay to head the jury. Daniel Stabrawa, for several years the concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra will be the deputy chairman.
The idea behind organisation of the Competition is not only to select the best performers and interpreters, but also to discover genuine artistic personalities. To make sure the prize-winners’ further careers gain momentum, on Augustin Dumay’s suggestion, we have invited not only violinists but representatives of the whole music industry to sit on the jury.
International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition is a hallmark of the town of Poznań and the region of Wielkopolska, as well as one of the most important events in Polish culture, an event of truly global reach, particularly in the modern-day era of mass communication.
What we offer our competitors are attractive prizes, the Adam Mickiewicz University Auditorium – a beautiful concert hall of exquisite acoustics, excellent pianists-accompanists, and two – chamber and symphony – orchestras.
We count on talented young violinists, and hope their sensitive, masterful interpretations shall leave an indelible mark on the history of the Competition. Those of you who succeed, shall join the ranks of most outstanding violin players gathered to celebrate Henryk Wieniawski. Looking forward to seeing you in Poznań!
