debateeurope.jpgLog on and sign in to the new Debate Europe website to express your views and interact live with EU commissioners on 29 January.

Is the EU going in the right direction? Does it make a difference where it really counts? Is it being overly meddlesome in trivial areas and not intervening enough in others?

Whatever your opinion, you can sign in and have your say when the new interactive Debate Europe website goes live on 29 January.

Commissioners Stavros Dimas (environment), Andris Piebalgs (energy) and Margot Wallström (communication) and other commission staff will be online between 15.00 and 17.00 (Central European Time) to launch the debate and field your comments.

To ensure all discussions are followed up and there is a real exchange between the EU and the general public, commission representatives will also join in the debate on a regular basis.

On the launch date, discussion will centre on three topics: the future of Europe, energy/climate change and intercultural dialogue. A fourth thread will allow you to discuss any EU-related topic you like. More themes will be added in the coming months.

The original Debate Europe site was launched in 2006 as part of Plan D (Dialogue, Debate and Democracy) and received over 1.3m hits in total – some 2 000 per day. In recognition, it won the European eDemocracy award for 2006.

The new site should be easier to use and more focused on key issues. It hopes to relaunch debate and help the EU engage in constructive dialogue, giving the public a chance to help shape the way Europe faces its current and future challenges.
